RMS (ROOT MEAN SQUARE)

RMS (ROOT MEAN SQUARE) Definition - What is RMS (ROOT MEAN SQUARE)?

What does RMS (ROOT MEAN SQUARE) stand for?

RMS, or Root Mean Square, is a way of measuring the average power of an electrical signal. It is sometimes used for audio purposes to determine the average total power of an audio signal. The term RMS comes from the equation which generates the result, whereby you square the amplitude of a signal, calculate the average mean of the squared amplitude, and then take the square root of that figure. This result in a number analogous to the average power of an audio signal over the entire duration of the audio.
