Stereo Definition - What is Stereo?
Sterephonic sound, aka "stereo audio" is a term for creating the appearance of multi-directional audio. In the case of stereo, this refers to two directions, typically referred to as "right" and "left". Stereo means that instead of all of the audio from all of the tracks in a recording being played simultaneously from one source, the source is split into two signals. During recording, tracks can be adjusted so that certain tracks only play from one of the two sources, or both, or in any combination of sources, including having the same track play at a different volume level through each channel ("source"). The main purpose of stereo recording is to create a high fidelity, lifelike sounding recording to be listened to with headphones on each ear.
